Salzburg, Austria (9-11 October 2015)

We decided to drive to Salzburg, Austria.  For those of you who don't know, this is where "The Sound of Music" was filmed.  There are lots of companies that offer tours to see all the famous locations in the movie.  I think I probably would enjoy that, but Sam couldn't stand the thought of being stuck with a tour for 4 hours, so instead, we opted for a hop on/hop off ticket for the city.  It worked out pretty well even though I'm sure we missed some tourist stops.  At least we had the freedom to come and go as we wanted.  We could stay as long or as short of a time we wanted at each stop.

Mirabell Gardens

The lake at the back of Leopoldskron Castle
(The backdrop of the von Trapp's home in the movie)

The Pavilion where Liesl sang "I am 16 going on 17"
During filming it was in Mirabell Gardens, but now it's on the property of Hellbrunn Castle.

There was a beautiful garden of dahlias at Hellbrunn Castle.
I really enjoyed seeing all the different types.  So pretty!

Of course Elly had to get some pictures too.  I love her!

We took a train up to Hohensalzburg Fortress (otherwise known as Salzburg Castle),
 which sits above the city.

A view of Salzburg from the Fortress

Taking the train back down

Looking up at Salzburg Castle from the city square.

Just eating some ice cream on the steps of the Salzburg Cathedral...☺
This little girl has no idea how lucky she is to see the places she's seen. It's normal for her to talk about going to Italy, France, Austria, etc.

Makartsteg Bridge
This is a pedestrian bridge over the Salzach River.  There are thousands
of love locks attached to both sides of the bridge.

Salzburg is also known as the birth place of Mozart.
This building is where he was born.

The old style door bell on the building of Mozart's birth.

Salzburg Horse Bath

The horse bath was originally built in the early 1700's as a horse bath.  Now it is just a decorative fountain.  It is also one of the locations where "Sound of Music" was filmed.

Because we're sappy like that, we returned to the love lock bridge the
following day to attach our own locks of love.

Elly put hers on the fence, but then decided she really
wanted to keep the lock so she took it off.

We left ours...so our love will last forever ♥

Back at Mirabell Gardens the second day

Getting a picture with Mozart ☺

The famous steps from "The Sound of Music"

This little garden on the grounds of Mirabell Gardens was fun.
Elly  had to get a picture with every. one. of. the. statues.

Back to the steps

Looking out from the area of St. Peter's monastery and cemetery
to see the Salzburg Cathedral in the distance.

Looking down on the cemetery

The view out of a stone window in the monastery.

On our way out of town we went by the Salt Mines.  No pictures were allowed on the tour, but we got some in our outfits before it started.  We each had to put on a jumpsuit, then they loaded us up on a train and took us deep into the mountain for a tour of the salt mine.
It was a really fun experience.
